Probate is the legal process of settling a person’s estate after death, including validating a will, paying debts, and distributing assets. In Washington State, probate is not always required. Certain assets may pass directly to beneficiaries or qualify for simplified estate procedures.
In Washington State, a Personal Representative is the legal term for the individual or institution responsible for administering an estate. If named in a will, that person is often referred to as the Executor, but the court formally appoints them as the Personal Representative.
Once a Personal Representative properly notifies creditors, they generally have four months to submit claims against the estate. Claims filed after this period may be barred under Washington law.
